Liberia: A Legacy of Deceit

Prez Sirleaf
Madam President:

Are you for real or are you being even more hypocritical? Oh, wait... do you seriously think your son's departure from those juicy posts would somewhat look like a redemption for you? Hell NO! Your darling son's exit from those fat-paying positions -- chairman of Liberia's most lucrative Oil Company (NOCAL) and senior advisor to the President -- has really got nothing to do with the fight against massive CORRUPTION that has marred your administration.

Corruption, bad governance remain rife in your government, and you know that. Besides,  the lack of basic social  services to your people, nepotism, and the general failure of your Administration to meet its end of the social contract continue to remain the cries of the Liberian people.

So, as much as your darling son, Robert Sirleaf, had been the face of nepotism in your government, he still does not encompass all of the corruption, nepotism, non-performance, mismanagement, etc. in this Administration.  Of course, Robert's  resignation can NEVER erase all of the above mentioned ills that continue to fester in your government. These issues will NOT disappear along with Robert, as he leaves government, Madam President.

Moreover, his exit from those moneymaking posts does NOT mean dwellers of West Point, Soniwein, "Peace Island", Buzzy Quarters or other mushrooming slum neighborhoods in Monrovia will now begin to access basic social services which your government has failed miserably to make accessible to its people. It certainly does NOT put a bowl of dry bonnie soup on the table of any of these ordinary Liberians who continue to suffer as prisoners of poverty in a country that has been blessed with so much natural resources --- ores, minerals, and now oil, etc.

If you really mean business, we, the Liberian people, want to see your other cronies kicked out of government. Do away with your clique holding profitable positions in government; rethink your approach to the battle against corruption; prosecute convicted corrupt officials; etc.

On the other hand, how  can Liberians rejoice over the exit of your son from NOCAL when they still have no idea what has become of oil blocks 1 to 7? It maybe recalled that a third round of bids in anticipation of awarding contracts for Blocks 1-5 was cancelled by NOCAL in 2011. No bids have since been accepted for these blocks. I have gathered that justification given by NOCAL for the cancellation of the bid for the above-mentioned blocks was linked to a review of the country’s petroleum policy. Since then (2011), NOCAL has remained mute about the inactivity---no update provided as to whether the bid has been reopened, or blocks (1-5) awarded already or not. Blocks 6 and 7, once under review, are still being negotiated since they were never fully submitted to the president or legislature nor executed. Again, NOCAL is yet to update the public on the status of these oil blocks.

So, Roberts Sirleaf's resignation as chairman of NOCAL and senior advisor to the President is only a drop in a bucket full of water; it makes no difference and has got NO impact on the current realities on the ground.

  1. I agree with you in toto. Verily, Robert Sirleaf - alone - resignation will not make the desirable difference, as it can not solved the weakness points in Mama Ellen's government, unless she exclude all spoilers and deceivers from her government. If not; I'll consider this resignation a form of secrets that does not appear its reality. We ask ِAlmighty Allah to offer us the better government that can progress and develop our country.Thank you sister.

    1. I see his exit as a mere cover-up. Like I said, we are watching you, Madam President.

  2. Electing her as president is the biggest blunder next to the uncivilized war by the Liberian people. Her first failed term was enough for us to say to her thanks but no thanks. However, we like to take deadly risk against our life. This is exactly what we did when we elected her for the second.

As for Robert's resignation, it means absolutely nothing to me because it will not bring an atom change to the suffering people of Liberia. Like you said Fof, it doesn't hold water the least in the face of the mass corruption in that country. Mrs. President, you might think that your son's resignation will relief some burdens you inflicted on yourself, but sorry, it will only increase them because there are Liberians who are well sound and they know what is UP!! Nevertheless, your son's resignation indicates that you want to do the right thing by getting rid of nepotism in your government. But the question is, would you continue on this path?

My last words, indeed, you've disappointed your supporters at home and at abroad. They least expected your inability to lead some nation like Liberia. And it never crossed their minds that you'll become the kingpin of the corruptors. Ahh!! Mrs. Sirleaf, what have we done to you- you treating us and our posterity this way? So, given you the highest honor in the country was the worst thing we did to ourselves? Thanks for your carelessness, inability, mismanagement, nepotism, and cronyism in your leadership.
